The long thought “fattening” potato is not so fattening after all.  A recent study and a medical conference shows that potatoes do not cause one to get fat, and also can help reduce blood pressure without weight gain.

However! – If you add the butter, the sour cream, or the mayo, you are adding more calories to the mix.  In the trial, they cooked potatoes in microwaves and without oil.  They used purple potatoes, but researchers are saying that any potato would probably yield similar, if not, the same results.

The potato has had a very bad reputation for quite some time.  Health-conscious people have struck out potatoes from their diet.  People did so in the past because when they heard the word potato, they immediately thought of fattening, lots of carbs, empty calories, and much more.  However, when the potato was prepared without butter or margarine or sour cream, the potato had only 110 calories and many other vitamins.

The study had 18 participants who were either obese or overweight and had high blood pressure.  They ate 6-8 potatoes with skins 2 times a day for one month.  They ate purple potatoes because of the health benefits of purple colored vegetables.

Blood pressure levels dropped about 4 percent.  None of the participant gained additional weight.

Deep frying the potatoes destroy the healthy substances of potatoes.  It only leaves behind starch, fat, and minerals.  Microwaving the potato preserved the nutrients.

Simply eating a light lunch can help you lose weight according to a recent study

The research was testing the behavioral response of eating a light lunch that had a low calorie content.  The study found that eating a small lunch does not make one eat a bigger dinner.

The study was conducted of 17 people who had their food provided to them on weekdays (Monday through Friday) for five weeks.  For 10 days, lunch was restricted to a 250 calorie limit.  The portions were controlled as well.  The restricted lunch was easily accessible and was not specially made by a dietician.  Participants were also free to eat as much as they wanted for their other meals.

At the end of the study, researchers found that the group did not eat more calories than normal for the lack of food that they ate for lunch.  The group also did not eat a bigger portion for dinner.  On top of all of that, the group also lost a small amount of weight (half a kg after 10 days).

This confirms that humans do not make precise regulations to foods they eat.  However, another researcher pointed out that losing weight is not that easy for many people.  People with an already normal BMI have a easier time losing weight than those who are considered overweight.

At one point or another, the overweight person stopped regulating their food intake.

A 250 calorie can of soup was one of the lunch items, and this would not be enough for some people and they would eat about an hour or two later.  The key is to fill the stomach with vegetables to make one feel full.  Having a 400 calorie or fewer lunch with vegetables is best.
