Diet sodas not a great alternative
It taste like the real thing! It is diet soda from a reputable soda company. It is the belief of many that diet sodas are a great alternative to regular soda without the calories or sugar. Unfortunately, according to new research (June 2011) diet sodas are linked with weight gain and increased blood sugar levels.
A researcher from the University of Texas’s School of Medicine showed that consuming diet soda leads to bigger waistlines. Another separate research showed that the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is used in many diet sodas, raised blood sugar levels in mice who were prone to diabetes.
What does this mean to consumers? This means that the advertisement and the idea that diet sodas or any drinks with artificial sweeteners may be misleading. Yes, they are free of sweeteners, but not free of the consequences from drinking it.
The study was conducted with 474 participants over a long period of time. The study originally was to see the process of disablement in people. Those who drank diet sodas had a 70% increase in waist circumference than those who did not drink diet soda. People who had more than two sodas a day had a 500% increase in waist circumference than those who did not drink diet soda. If you say that you do not mind a bigger abdominal, know that abdominal fat carries a major risk in diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
In the other study with mice, mice who were diabetes prone showed that when they consumed aspartame, their fasting glucose level rose significantly.
A littler earlier in June, the U.K. did a study that suggests that diet drinks do not satisfy one’s appetite and even though they do not have calories, they sneak up elsewhere, such as a large, sweet portion of dessert.
A solution to wanting to drink something bubbly is to use sparkling water with some flavoring such as a slice of lemon or lime.
