What Am I Supposed to Burn?
Do you have a cardio machine or have you been on a cardio machine at the gym? Have you seen those charts with the “Fat Burning Zone” and “Cardio Workout Zone” or something similar to that? We hear that the best way to burn fat is to stay in the fat burning zone, but the matter of fact is that you need to burn off calories.
If you wonder if biking or running faster and going out of your target heart rate is beneficial or worse for you here are some answers.
Your body needs fuel to burn when you are exercising. When you burn these fuels, you lose weight. However, depending on how much you are exercising, the body will switch the type of fuel it uses. For example, if you are out of your target heart rate, your body will burn carbohydrates for energy. If you are in your target heart rate, your body will burn fat for energy. The ratio depends on what you are doing.
The higher intense workout such as running and sprinting rely on carbohydrates for energy. This is because the energy needed to breakdown carbs is available rather than breaking down fat. However, if you are exercising at a slower pace, the pathway for breaking down fat is available and your body will use fat for energy.
Now when you look at weight loss, you need to lose calories. Whether you lose a pound of fat or a pound of carbs, a pound is a pound is a pound. Get it? You can tailor what type to get rid of (carbs or fat).
When you exercise regularly, you breakdown fat and carbs and ultimately you lose weight. When the amount of calories your burn is greater than the calories you eat, you lose weight. Additionally, if you exercise regularly, your body adapts and gets more efficient at extracting oxygen which helps you to break down fat more efficiently. As an added bonus, when you blood is pumping, the blood flow helps to move the fatty acids in your body and moves them into areas in need. (Imagine a straw or hose with gunk inside. If you force a lot of water through, you can probably release the gunk and move it out of the hose or straw. Same concept applies to your veins. If there is gunk (like fat deposits) in your veins, if you have high blood flow, it will move the gunk out of your body.)
Important: If you are doing only cardio to lose weight, you are not being efficient. Do some weight lifting. As you lift weights, your metabolism goes up as well and this will help you to lose extra calories.
